DJ Shift Honolulu Weekly Spinzone feature
Shift into high gear
02-20-2008
Everything about Hawai‘i nightlife revolves around competition.
The same holds true in the club DJ game. For DJ Shift, it’s not about getting your foot in the door. It’s getting your whole body in the room and locking the door behind you.
As a relative newcomer to the scene, Shift has semi-established himself already by locking down resident status at 18-and-over top-40 locales: Xyloh and Venus.
“The most important thing to me is attitude,” he says. ”You can be flawless in mixing and have the ability to do crazy scratches and mash-ups but if your attitude is bad I don’t think you’re gonna make it very far.”
Don’t let the mainstream-radio friendly venues fool you. Shift is a devoted fan of the underground sound before anything else. He showcases his upbeat blend of house and breaks at Electronica Only Mondays at Venus. He’s also rocked less trendy dance floors at Galaxy, Bliss and Ong King.
-Kalani Wilhelm
Xyloh, 1220 Kona St., Every Thu. and Fri., 10pm–2am, 21+, Venus, 1344 Kona St., Every Mon. and Sat., 10pm–4am, 18+; [myspace.com/mongoosedog]

Sifu Walker Spinzone
02-13-2008
Every Tuesday night, KTUH listeners get their fill of classic soul thanks in part to the musical styling of DJ Sifu “Jive” Walker.
As one of the most seasoned staffers at Hawai‘i’s only alternative, Walker’s radio shows have run the gamut of genres of only the smoothest and funkiest in hip-hop, breaks, jazz and fusion.
While concentrating solely on his show at the moment, you can also catch the certified funk sole maestro on the decks at KTUH sponsored events and also at Next Door and Thirtyninehotel for the monthly installments of The Next Movement and Soul Clap.
With all the new music of today, he admits he’ll always be biased to music’s more soulful side.
“I really appreciate the presentation, the sharp suits, the clear voices, and the “sophisticated gentleman” vibe,” he said. “It brings a completely different level of class to the music … you can’t mess with that.”
—Kalani Wilhelm
Every Tues. 6pm—9pm, “Afrostylus” KTUH 90.3 FM, 89.9 FM Windward, 91.3 FM North Shore, 866 Digital Cable, [ktuh.org], [myspace.com/sifu].

DJ Drama Honolulu Weekly Spinzone
Time for Drama
02-06-2008
Copywritten or not; if you got love on the streets, you’re as good as gold. Putting out quality street music has made DJ Drama, top dog and king of the mixtape.
From hood to hood, East to West, Drama’s infamous Gangsta Grillz mixtape franchise changed the way DJs could market their music while pushing the focus back on the guy behind the turntables. Over 20 mixtapes later, his name and mixtape magic is now a brand.
Aside from the esteemed title of T.I.’s Official DJ, Drama is also the founding member of Atlanta’s Aphilliates crew.
Busted by the FBI for copyright infringement in January 2007, the drama (pardon the pun) did little to affect his status in the hip hop game, if anything the publicity increased his popularity and street cred.
Check out the master mogul Saturday at Pipeline Cafe.
-Kalani Wilhelm
Third Annual Pro Jam, Pipeline Cafe, Sat 2/9, 9pm, 18+, [ticketmaster.com], [gangstagrillz.com], [pipelinecafe.net], 946-8620
