Kristylez and Emirc open up for Three 6 Mafia
Would love to see a Hawaii flyer, two in fact, one featuring Mr. Flip The Bird the other featuring Krystilez. I don't think they've ever performed together. A collab of any kind would be worth the cost of admission alone. I hope someone is on video duty so at least the moment can be captured and viewed on YouTube. The outdoor stage sounds interesting too.
Still waiting to see an event featuring Emirc, Kristylez, Creed, Moxx and I.A. Can anyone say live mixtape? Everyone's on their personal grind and that's understandable but an epic moment featuring the cream of the crop is long overdue.

DJ Rayne Interview
KALANI: How has Hawaii's dance music scene change over the years, what are some of the trends of today?
RAYNE: "I have been a vital part of this scene, both as as Dj and as a Club Patron for over 10 years. I have watch it grow, almost from infancy, and blossom into a vital aspect of Hawaii's culture. Whether its Hip-Hop, or House Music, this is a "Dance Culture". What gives it life are its crowded dance floors. People ,give it character, dance floors give it identity. Hawaii is forever evolving, through its people, and as people leave, they take a bit of our scene with them, and as people arrive, they bring something new. For some people, Hawaii's Clubbing scene is simply nothing more than a random weekend stress relief, But there's a tight family of Artists, Musicians, Poets and Service Indusrty workers who are into it every day, everynight. It runs in our blood. This is our life. Its a hell of a lot more than a 9 to 5!Trends come and go, But some of the original people that began this scene, years ago are still as much a part it as ever were. We have evolved from an underground culture of True Heads, Turtablist's, Junglists, MC's, Breakers, Poppers and Lockers, etc., into something a little bit more palatable to the mainstream state of mind."
KALANI: If you could had three wishes that would improve Hawaii nightlife what would they be?
RAYNE: "Bring back the Old Skool State of Mind. Its not a place to "BE SCENE", its about the music...End Mainstream Hip-Hop. Underground is way better. Who care how much money you make, rap about something that matters. Every night Club Should have the best, and most expensive sound systems. If you have ever been clubbing anywhere else in the world, you realize that Hawaii is light years around the power curve. I own a sound company with a good friend of mine. We are always pushing for quality in sound."
KALANI: How can another deejay catch your attention and make you say this guy/gal is dope?
RAYNE: "Hawaii has some of the greatest DJ's i have ever heard. Even better than the some of the DJ that Promoters are paying Thousands of dollars to come the the Islands and play. But there are a few legends that have completely blown my mind. If your on point and connected with you crowd, It can be magic! And if you can keep me dancing, you got my props!"
KALANI: Before you start a set what's your mindset like? Do you have a set plan of what you want to play? why or why not?
RAYNE: "Anyone that knows me, knows i tend to be moody. Life is a mindset. DJing has always been my expression. Its how I vent. Its how I smile. I play music based on whats around me, And how it makes me feel. Over the years, have found that my sets are much beter when I live the moment."
KALANI: What is your current deejay weekly schedule?
"Recently I have made appearances at Next Door for 1st Friday's, The Living Room for FAM ( Fasion, Art Music), Longhi's for Image Night, Nicks Fishmarket for the Partmasters, 5520, at The Princeville Resort in Kauai for Aya, Release, at the Sheraton, Poipu, Kauai for F&M, Hula's Bar and Lei Stand for Jack Law, The loft, and Lotus .You can catch me form time to time at Puma in Waikiki, at various outdoor events and I still maintain my underground roots, at a Private Afterhours Club. I also throw free parties at Ka'ka'ako Beach Park from time to time."
KALANI: Any big things coming up for you in 2008?
RAYNE: "About two years ago, I lost myself as an artist. Got caught up in the lime light. Forgot what was important to me and why I started DJing in the first place. I needed a break. 2008 is a new beginning. Not a start over, but a re-energized, more aggressive me.(The)dance floor will be seeing a lot more of me. The break is over."
KALANI: Did you make a New Year's resolution?
RAYNE: "My resolution is to quit smoking... I'll keep u posted on that one... Its hard! is vaporizing cheating?"
KALANI: Main objective whenever you spin?
RAYNE: "My style of music can be quite aggressive and have an edge of funk to it. My objective is to pack the dance floor, and I dont stop until I do. I try to make the people, hugging the walls of the club, uncomfortable where they stand. Force them to shake a leg, wiggle some hips, loosen up and enjoy themselves. In a club, there's the dance floor and then there's the socializing area. I try to make the whole club a dance floor. I even make the bartenders wiggle."
KALANI: Favorite places to spin? Favorite places to spin that aren't around anymore?
RAYNE: "My favorite place to spin in on the beach. No club can conpare to this. The Wave Waikiki will forever be my true love and my all time favorite place to spin. Playing for my friends is a blessing! I actually am the only person in the world that owns a piece of that dancefloor. It's actually the only piece of the Wave left. Rest in Peace."
KALANI: Who do you credit for helping you're growth as a deejay? gig opportunities?
RAYNE: "Ramyt, the imfamous "Archangel" and Jesse Pohera, the late, "Tricky Trever." These guys were the ones that sparked the idea inside my head. And I never looked back. Honestly, most of my friends that are dj's, influence me, in one way or another. Other's are Steve Lawler, Miguel Migs, Ltj Bukem, to name a few.
My first gig opportunity was given to me from Rebecca of "Viva La Diva" at Evolutions Night Club " Formerly The Pink Cadillac". And I have played for so many promoters on this island, that i appreciate all of them for allowing me to play."
>
Finish the following sentences:
I love being a deejay because:
"being on stage, playing music for people is a childhood dream come true. I love what i do. I make people dance for a living. My Job is to make people happy! Not many can say that!"
Music is important to me because:
"It's my life, its everything about me. With out it, who would I be? I don't know and don't plan on finding out. A world without music... Not mine!"

Exclusive: DJ Compose talks about his "Can't NOC the Hustle" mixtape
Kalani: NSK has set the standard as far as deejaying in Hawaii, no one can argue that fact. The big question many may have is why it took so long for a NSK dj to put out a mix tape?
COMPOSE: "There are a lot of factors to this… First of all, our focus has primarily been in the performance aspect of DJing… whether it is a doing clubs, actual performances, or throwing events. Our resume shows this, and we feel we changed the game in a lot of ways. Now it’s time for us to shake it up once again and go back to the days of putting quality mixes out of stuff we actually like… not what necessarily is “cool”. We have actually had many mixes done throughout the years, but this is the first one that actually was put out and available for purchase. It definitely is way overdue… but we plan to make up for lost time."
Kalani: What went into selecting the tracks? Were you picky?
COMPOSE: "I was extremely calculated with this mix… and what is crazy was I had most of this mix done a few months ago… and now a lot of the songs are pretty popular! Overall, I wanted to stay away from trends and stuff going on (Mash-ups, retro music, etc.) and put a tape out with great “true” music. It may not be perfect, but I think it was executed pretty well."
Kalani: How did you approach Emirc about the project? How far do you guys go back?
COMPOSE: "I feel Emirc (Tassho Pearce) is one of the most amazing dudes I know… He is extremely talented, and is a person who never settles. I have known dude for a good while now growing up in the scene, and feel that he had the same drive and hunger NSK has. (He used to rip dudes apart in MC Battles the same time we were battling). He has turned his art into a very successful business (Big up to the Flip The Bird gang). I feel we always had a mutual respect for each other, so when I approached him with the idea of flipping “roc boys” into “Noc boys”, he was all for it! In fact, by the time I got to the studio, he was already done with the Track!!! He knocked it out the park with it too. Much respect to Tassho."
Kalani: What have some of the responses been from fellow deejays?
COMPOSE: "I believe the people who would like and appreciate this mix the most are my peers… they can attest to how difficult it is to do a project like this… and for the most part everyone has been real supportive."
Kalani: What is NSK's main goal with the project?
COMPOSE: "As in anything, our goal is to always stay one step ahead of the game… We feel we have to not only do things for ourselves, but for the whole scene in general. Where else do find a group of dj’s so mixed and intertwined in all the scenes here in Hawaii? I can honestly say no one. The same night you’ll find me doing a party @ the W is the same night you see E$kae doing Skyline @ the HanoHano Room while Jami is doing an 80’s Jumpoff @ Next Door, while Solution is performing at a Hip-Hop event somewhere else… that what is so dope is we can basically jump to each others events and not skip a beat. We some Versatile Motherfu*ckers!"
Kalani: Talk about the support you've received?
COMPOSE: "First of all, Big up to my main bro Jimmy Taco for helping me… that’s my dude for real. All the stores that I believe in showed me love, so Much Mahalo’s to Kicks/HI, Dig Lifestyle, Fitted, In4mation, Exclusive, Prototype, Sera’s, Queens, and everyone who copped a CD."
Kalani: About how long did it take to finish it? Was it nerve racking at all?
COMPOSE: "It really didn’t take too long finishing, but every day that passed was grueling because I wanted to get it out while the music was fresh… and whole bunch of other things are involved too. (Physically printing it out, marketing and promotion… etc.) but it all worked out in the end with the release… we had a great turn out and it was topped off with a crazy night with Kid Sister and DJ A-trak."
Kalani: When should we expect mixtapes from the rest of the crew?
COMPOSE: "The plan is to drop it as soon as possible, we all have our own idea of what they want in a mixtape, so it should be fun to see what myself and the crew come up with."
Kalani: I personally feel, your mixtape may inspire and push other local deejays to put out mixtapes of their own. What would you're reaction be if that happened? How would it feel to actually start such a movement?
COMPOSE: "Again, that is the main goal…. When we were involved with the battle scene, we wanted to inspire others to do what we do by not only battling, but also throwing local DJ Battles for the Up and Coming DJ’s (our Checkmate battles)… looking back at it, we had some great DJ’s involved, namely DJ Anit… who now is killing it here and in the mainland. Now we have a wider audience who look at us, and I feel that doing things such as this mix will push others to step their game up… and that is only gonna make things better for all of us."
Kalani: Anything else you want to let readers know?
COMPOSE: "Thanks to all those that support us… we’ll continue to cook up that miraculous shit for you. Be on the lookout for future projects, as well as a new venture with Kicks/HI called “Super Handsome Sound” which is gonna murder things in ’08."
DJ Rayne Spinzone
01-16-2008
Sadly, Honolulu’s nightlife tends to be more about being seen than the scene itself.
DJ Rayne understands this new school mainstream state of mind but still relishes the days when it was more about the music, variety and partying as one. While half-heartedly accepting the fact, the dance music specialist believes resurgence to the old days is definitely in order.
“What gives it life are its crowded dance floors,” he says. “People give it character, dance floors give it identity. In a club, there’s the dance floor and then there’s the socializing area. I try to make the whole club a dance floor.”
With no weekly residencies at the moment, consider Rayne one of the most sought after, coveted free agents around.
While he explores his options, credit clubs of the past like Evolutions and Wave Waikiki for his underground upbringing and dance-rooted values,
To some, music is a simple escape some DJ look at it as their job, for Rayne it’s life.

Calling all drunk drivers! Would this even work?!
Allow disabling devices in cars of DUI repeaters
THE ISSUE
Legislators are proposing that repeat DUI drivers be required to install a device that keeps their cars from starting if they're drunk.
Hawaii is among only five states that have neglected to use modern technology to prevent repeat drunken drivers from starting their cars' engines when impaired. Lawmakers who have ignored such proposals during the last two legislative sessions should allow judges to require repeat offenders to install ignition interlock devices on their vehicles.
Hawaii's alcohol-related traffic deaths have increased from an average of 51 deaths per year from 1999 through 2001 to 73 deaths yearly from 2002 through 2006, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Hawaii has the highest percentage of traffic deaths involving alcohol, according to the organization.
Republican legislators propose a bill requiring repeat DUI offenders to install in their cars an alcohol ignition interlock system, a breath-test device that prevents a drunk person from starting the engine. The test must be repeated at certain intervals to make sure that a friend had not breathed into it to start the engine.
The GOP proposal would prevent judges from using discretion in ordering the device's installation. Indeed, Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt is asking that his state's judges, who now have that discretion, be required to order that the locks be installed by drivers convicted of a second or more offense. In 2005, Missouri courts required only 19 percent of repeat offenders to install them.
Judges should be allowed to exercise a degree of flexibility in sentencing but should not use it at the drop of a hat. Legislation that includes conditions for them to do so should be tailored to keep judges from exercising discretion excessively.
Heralded Texas QB recruit follows Jones to SMU
(the day the Rainbows became officially known as Warriors)
As most thought all along the much quarterback recruit from Texas will follow Jones to SMU. The second quarterback recruit as well (I bet they both were in the Colt Brennan mold as far as football IQ, accuracy and arm strength.)
So far, Coach Dennis McKnight (ST), Wes Suan (RB) and Dan Morrison (QB) have said publicly that they will follow June Jones to SMU.
That means Ron Lee (WR), Cal Lee (LB), Rich Miano (DB), Reinfold (idk), George Lumpkin (AC) and most importantly George McMackin (DC) might or will remain at UH.
I hope McMackin gets the head coaching gig and Dick Tomey is appointed athletic director. I don't see Duane Akina or Norm Chow returning to Hawaii for the simple fact that they aren't as in touch with the "Hawaii way" as we might think. They are adapted to the mainland style of doing things and probably have bigger goals in sight than coming back to the University of Hawaii. (maybe Akina or Chow will follow the next UH head coach in a few years, who knows?)
Some may not agree but you can't get much stronger than the Hawaii ties and overall understanding of Hawaii possessed by McMackin and Tomey. UH football may take a few steps back but the passion for the state already instilled in Lumpkin, Miano and the Lee brothers shouldn't put us back too far.
UH diehards stand up!!!
Jones is gone but the coaches that remain all know and understand Jones' vision.

DJ Anit interview
Kalani: What you have been up to musically and career wise in the last year?
ANIT: "Lets see...Well one of our guests was Donnie from Making the Band. That took place in San Jose at a club called Taste. I usually spin there monthly in the Bay.
Dig Lifestyles Hawaii got me a gig at Les Deux for a street wear convention. that was a pretty dope event especially since Les Deux is known to be an exclusive/celeb spot."
All together, I've been doing more hiphop events in the Bay like at Club 6 , Poleng and Skylark. I'm still trying to get my foot in the door for more bigger commercial clubs.
This year of 2008, I should be getting more gigs in SF and got several gigs lined up from the Uhype promoters and 3 Style Attractions. I have the March 15 Manny Pacquioua in Vegas."
KW: It comes very natural for you but how important is it to you to give off positive "energy" and entertain the crowd?
ANIT: "It's pretty important. I think a crowd likes a dj who is intimate with them. you can see this take place at the W!"
KW: You've added "mash-up" to your arsenal, how else have you grown, improved or changed your style?
ANIT: "I wanted to diversify my music outside of being completely mainstream so I started messing and playing with mashups and hype remixes similar to b more."
KW: You play alot of "girlie anthems" (for lack of a better term) featuring female artists talk about that a little? and why?
ANIT: "Lol. Hmmm... These anthems are fun to dance to! Also, my girls always love them so I'll play it for them! It's for the crowd and myself. plus too, as a girl dj, you need to rock some girly anthems...boys cant do it much!"
KW: How's school going? When will you finish? What's next after that? Will you face any big decisions soon?
ANIT: "I graduate may 2008. i still have yet to decide what i want to do after usf. im thinking of working for a corporate company. i need to decide soon though!!! yikes!"
KW: Will you move back to Hawaii when you graduate? What factors exist?
ANIT: "Damn...let's see. I want to move back if a business opportunity exist. In a way, I want to move back but I know there are alot more opportunities and different people to meet outside of home. also, I know my mom wants me to do more school! So basically, I'm still iffy about this situation and may want to move outside of SF like to LA or Vegas. I'm torn though because I already semi-set my foot into the door in SF. I don't wanna leave the gigs I got there and the people I've met. That's what sucks about graduating and looking for a career!"
KW: Weigh the importance of school and deejaying?
ANIT: "School is way more important than deejaying. I'm the first in my family who will be graduating! Deejaying is pretty up there though. I know I can always toy with my tables when I am either bored, got new music, or just simply hate my hw. lol."
KW: What's the feeling you have whenever you return to Hawaii for the holidays?
ANIT: "It's an awesome feeling. I'm always happy to be home because of the people I know here. The W promoters are all good people and I'm loyal to them whenever I return because of that."
KW: Your favorite Hawaii deejay and why?
ANIT: "Wow. lol. I love all deejays here!"
KW: What were some of the highlights of your time back home?
ANIT: "Hmmm well there was this one time when a guy just rested his arms on my table right in front of me throughout my whole set! He just stood there watching and that was pretty funny yet awkward. My friends were like "How's that guy just staring!" he was pretty old too."
KW: If you made one, what is your New Year's Resolution?
ANIT: "Probably to make a mix tape because I've been lagging."
That' jigga Re-Run...

The dance and crowd vibes were reminscent of days gone by. The togetherness was felt throughout the sweat drenched building. Maui homies and ohana DJ Jay-P and ZV-One made the treck over, so you know the Valley Isle was definitely in the building. More pics to come so stay tuned nukkas...
DJ Anit wrecks shop
Tina’s back
by Kalani Wilhelm / 01-09-08
The scene met Tina Viernes, or DJ Anit, when she was just a teenager tearing it up at popular clubs like the Maze and Reign. Even then, she displayed the charisma and know-how beyond her years and equal to some of the best club DJs around.
Fast forward to the here and now and you’ll find Viernes at popular Bay Area dwellings like Club Six, Poleng, Skylark and Taste.
Promoters constantly ring her iPhone whenever they find out she’s home. She may fit a gig or two in her busy schedule but Saturdays are forever booked at the W.
“It’s an awesome feeling. I’m always happy to be home because of the people I know here,” she says. “The W promoters are all good people and I’m loyal to them whenever I return.”
Still proving that DJs shouldn’t look so serious behind the decks, Anit gets down with the best of them. It’s this infectious enthusiasm that gets party people’s attention.
School may be out for the soon-to be USF graduate, but it’s still in session on the turntables. The part-time Hawai‘i resident has recently added mash-up and more hype remixes. Fans should expect a mixtape due out sometime this year.
Discover why it’s impossible to stop this girl’s party rock Saturday at her final appearance of Christmas break.
